What Makes a Man a Man?

Yesterday we were asked to transport and hang drywall at a construction site. We quickly realized that we knew nothing about building and fixing things (You have to know those things to be a true man right?). It didn't help that we were working next to Perkins, the manliest man of all (no offense to Harrison Ford). He is a straight up beard-sporting, wood-chopping, pancake-devouring, cabin-building, 6' 6'' lumberjack. It was a humbling experience that reminded us of how uncool we sometimes are. We are the kind of guys that they tell to practice nailing nails into a 2x4 instead of actually working. A quick antidote for pride is remembering that you couldn't even drill a screw into a wall. Yeah...

Come to think of it we are uncool in a lot of things.

Oh well. You can't win 'em all.

  2. I always feel like a looser taking my car to the shop. Since I don't know anything about cars, the mechanics give me this look as if to ask, “Do you know what gender you are?” On another time, I was reading a student’s essay in the writing lab. She was writing about her new car, and admitted that I knew nothing about automobiles. In a jeering laugh she said, “Aren’t you suppose to be a man?” To top it all off, once a girl knew more about what was wrong with my car than I did. I’m glad I’m not the only one who experiences ‘uncoolness.’

Oh and just so Race knows, I commented on this post without any coercion on the authors' part.

  3. When I was in high school a man was a boy that could fix anything and back a boat into the water. Now I think a man is a boy that will do the dishes and change a poopy diaper! Todd's almost there!
And yes, we do laugh at the guy who comes into the tire store and didn't know he was supposed to change the oil! Behind his back, of course.

  5. Ha ha, well, this has made me feel a little more manly. I don't think I am too horrible and construction work, and I know a decent amount about my car.

The picture with the basketball guy holding you is halarious by the way. Pulling that picture off is definately impressive enough that you should inherit a couple manly points from it.

  6. I think you're better than that.
It's not about cars and construction.

It's about staying by people who need you, being kind, and HAVING ABS OF STEEL! OMG!!
    I'm just kidding!

But I think you guys are pretty manly. But if it bothers you that much, you can just practice a little by reading about cars.
